Amalgam Fillings

Amalgam or a silver filling can be a great choice to restore and fill your dental cavity. Dental amalgam is less expensive, strong, long-lasting and less likely to break. When placing dental amalgam, the dentist first drills the tooth to remove the decay, and then shapes the tooth cavity for placement of the amalgam filling. Then, softened amalgam putty is placed and shaped in the prepared cavity, where it rapidly hardens into a solid filling.

Composite or White Fillings

Commonly known as white fillings (tooth colored fillings), composite fillings are the most popular filling material used in cosmetic dentistry today. Composite material is available in a wide range of tooth colors allowing for a closely matched color to the existing teeth, making the restoration nearly invisible. The white filling material can be used to replace tooth decay, missing or fractured tooth structure. It is the best option for filling front teeth to provide a more aesthetically pleasing result and oral health.

Composite VS. Amalgam

Composite tooth fillings are less invasive and typically more conservative than amalgam (silver) fillings, or gold fillings. Unlike amalgam material, composite is micro-mechanically bonded or glued into the tooth structure, thus preserving the maximum amount of tooth possible. Alternatively, placement of an amalgam filling requires additional drilling, if left untreated - and removal of healthy tooth structure in order to keep the filling in place.

On occasion, amalgams are a better option in areas that are hard to keep dry or when the filling requires that it is placed deep below the gum line. For people with higher cavity rates, amalgam can be beneficial to slow down decay progression.
